Connect XYZ: Assessment, Tutoring, Summer Camp
The goal of the Connect XYZ program is to help children ages 4- 12 years old close the gap between reading performance and potential by developing the five components of reading outlined by the National Reading Panel Report of 2000; phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Our Connect XYZ programs are geared to teach children not only the fundamentals of reading but also the complexity of comprehension so that they are making meaning connections to information. These are critical skills that will enable them to be more successful in the classroom and in their lives. The programs are lead by special educators and behavior therapists that have experience working with children on the autism spectrum and children with learning delays. Together, they implement research based personalized academic interventions based on developmental theory and the Maryland Common Core Curriculum.
The first step is to conduct a comprehensive assessment with a focus on reading. The Shafer Center offers an extensive compilation of standardized tests and informal assessments to establish an accurate picture of each child’s learning profile. All assessments are conducted by our qualified instructors; the average testing time is approximately 6 hours in 2-3 sessions.
Based on your child’s unique learning profile and the recommendation from the Connect Plan, an individualized instruction will be implemented. Interventions focus on the underlying causes for difficulties in the areas of reading, are taught in a 1:1 environment, and implemented by a highly-qualified educator. The Connect Tutors will collect data during each session in order to effectively monitor progress. The Shafer Center utilizes behavior techniques based on applied behavior analysis. This instruction can be conducted at The Shafer Center or in the child’s home.
