Classroom Programming

Inspire is a full-day language based class that focuses on preparing students for a more inclusive environment.  Children in the Inspire classroom are currently on the track to earn their high school diploma, have strong academic skills, are somewhat conversational, and have social or behavioral needs that impact their ability to be included within the public school setting.

The curriculum focuses on academics geared toward preparing students for a more inclusive environment.  Emphasis is placed on group learning and students will participate in classroom tests as well as homework to practice skills learned in the classroom. Their schedule will include not only reading and math but science, social studies, technology, and other specials found in more inclusive school settings. Students in Inspire currently follow the Common Core Curriculum.

Inspire is for children in 3rd grade. This is just one of the ways The Shafer Center for Early Intervention is improving skills for children with autism.

Child/Staff Ratio

  • 10 children/2 adults (masters level special educator and bachelor’s level classroom assistant)
  • 2.5 hours of integrated speech-language pathology services per week
  • 5 hours of behavior consultation per week by BCBA or BCaBA for entire classroom


  • 6 hours per day, 9:00-3:00
  • 5 days per week

Prerequisite Skills

  • Demonstrates classroom readiness skills; sitting in a group, orienting towards adult, raising hand, answering a question, managing personal belongings
  • Strong academic skills; can identify letters, letter sounds, numbers, read simple cvc words, sight words, simple addition, and answer basic questions about a comprehension activity
  • Able to learn new academic skills in a small group setting
  • Understands and can play simple games
  • Is a verbal student with some conversational skills
